Artwork - Another Version Of The Truth
Creating artwork for one of the most influential bands in modern music.

Nine Inch Nails

Background

In 2008/9 Nine Inch Nails frontman, Trent Reznor had plans to have his Lights In The Sky tour filmed by James Cameron’s team of 3D cinema experts. Sadly this idea did not come to fruition however while plans to film a live tour appeared to be on hold, he allowed fans to film the last leg of the tour in its entirety. It was here that professional film makers, audiophiles, designers and fans came together to create a multi-angle monster of a live show package. I oversaw the design of the project including promotional material, packaging, booklets and website design.

The Challenge

Design artwork that:

  • Feels authentic to Nine Inch Nails’ raw, industrial visual style

  • Avoids pastiche or repetition of existing work

  • Communicates tone and atmosphere without relying on literal imagery

The balance was critical — push too far and it loses identity, stay too safe and it lacks impact. We also had to work across different time-zones, managing deadlines and expectations on a global scale.

The Approach

I explored a series of abstract and textural directions, focusing on:

  • Distortion and degradation

  • Minimal, high-contrast compositions

  • Tension between control and chaos

The aim was to create visuals that felt unsettling but intentional — echoing the sonic identity of the band.

Multiple concepts were developed and refined, testing how far the visual language could be pushed while remaining recognisably “NIN”.

Outcome

Selected concepts were approved by the band and producers validating the direction and its alignment
with the band’s visual identity.

The final work contributes to a body of visuals associated with one of the most culturally significant acts in modern music.

This project reinforced the importance of restraint and intent — especially when designing for a brand with such a strong and established voice.

Rather than adding noise, the focus was on creating something that felt considered, confident and true to the DNA of Nine Inch Nails.
